Batam Overseas Community Service Project
Name of home: Assakinah
Person in charge: Ummy
Number of children: 23 (20 schooling, 3 still very young)
The children all stay within the home, whether or not they are orphans or not, are their parents around , i am not really sure. As it's already a miracle that i could actually gather any information about the home given that i have totally no idea what she was saying most of the time in basar indonesia. its about 10 mins ride away from the ferry terminal, no really far actually. Had to be conned by the taxi driver for the price first, as i didn't really know where the location of the home was untill i checked where is it located at with my GPS. However , though i know where is the place located at, but i can't find the satelite map for this home. All seems so similar there. I just roughly know the location on the sat map. To add on the problem, i can't find any batam map that clearly state out the road names neither is there any indicator for the google earth program that i am using. Anyway i will try as time goes.

The place is basically surrounded with residential homes, and has a school just directly across a small stretch of road. Pretty small place for a home that houses 23 children. What i gathered from the lady is that they would appreciate if we could get them some stationaries, books, dictionary ( english to indonesia vice versa) , clothings and bags for those who go to school. What i personally think would be good for them as well would be a computer configured for indonesian language, a digital camera for their outings and etc.

As you can see, its the storage compartment for the children and all of them has their own toiletries , but as what i notice. The holders are degrading and chip off bit by bit, so perhaps we could get some plastic ware for them to hold their tolietries as well as some supplies of toothpaste , lotions and etc. Fixtures needed : Toliet door, seriously falling apart which is held on by one of the hinges and you have to push the door up and carry it to open the door. TV antenna : Just a cable that acts as the antenna. I would be bringing my TV ant booster over. Finally got some use for it. Room lighting: The single room which has the light bulb issue |
1. As you can see as well, the drainage for the rain water is gone and therefore whenever it rains , instead of draining to the drain, it pours into the toliet before i gets to the drain. Anyone interested in plumbing?
2. This is where the common corridor is.
3. As per most household, there's a main water storage tank and they just douse themself with the water for bathing.

Rooms for the children - please refer to below for the photos. some of the rooms are shared between two while some up to 4 or 5 boys. One of the room in particular either has its fuse or wiring
faulty and therefore is unable to light up in the night. If possible , we could also get them some spare lightbulbs.
As you can see, the light bulbs can't be too large , else the blades of the fan would surely hit with it.
1 and 2 - Girl's room
Wonder why i took all the room photos up rite? Well for one reason the room is really small and i say its about slight more than 2 m by 2 m per room.
3. Some of the shoes are really breaking apart, should drop some shoes down for them soon.
Kitchen
__________
Generally when i make my way around the kitchen, basically all are pretty taken care of . There is even a hot water boiler by the side of the kitchen. Well, you could also see the huge boxes of maggi mee that presumingly being cooked for their as meals most of the time.
With 23 children, we wouldn't be surprised to see the huge bulk of clothes the lady has to clean. there are even more clothes on the left of this scene.
The main entrance of the home, the little boy there is one of the three kids that are still too small for school. very cute and curious boy.

Price that i gathered and paid for Ferry - twoway from harbourfront center to batam center , $40 + $7 return tax Taxi fee to and back from the home - around 13 dollars (seriously being hacked when i check via GPS coordinate and google earth, its only about few kilometres away. but then again, kinda of long when you're on the road) if we were to go down with items, i suppose having a van would be much cost efficent but i am unable to find any of such during my short visit there. So might have to look for lobangs of such there.
